|The Rising Sun||Friendly country village pub with a welcoming landlord, character bars and eating areas, and good food and drink; seats in garden |
In a little village in the heart of the Chilterns, this charming 17th-c pub is run by a friendly licensee who welcomes all who walk through his door; it's particularly popular at lunchtime with walkers from nearby Witheridge Hill. The cosy bar has beams, old red and white floor tiles, a comfortable sofa, lots of walking sticks in a pot by the woodburning stove, books on the window sill and leather stools against the counter where they serve Brakspears Bitter and Oxford Gold and a changing guest beer on handpump and a dozen wines by the glass. The three interlinked eating areas have rugs on bare boards, pictures on dark red walls and seating that includes captain's and farmhouse chairs, chunky benches and cushioned wall seats around an assortment of tables; one section has a log fire in a small brick fireplace. There are picnic-sets and white metal chairs and tables in the pleasant back garden.
